WHAT SETS MY MUSIC APART FROM OTHER BANDS
Taking the most ancient and magnificent roots rhythms from Greece, Turkey and North Africa, and re-presenting it to you in its most vibrant, and pulsating contemporary form - so unique, so uplifting, I believe that CHRISSE FEROS & THE DRUMMERS OF TOUMBA! TOUMBA! and MEGALI WORLDBEAT will take you on an unforgettable musical journey.
I am a Hunter and Gatherer of world music rhythms and styles with an overwhelming passion to write and re-create, and to perform these original works.
I classify myself as a recording artist, composer, and a 'Librarian' - writing, recording, and collecting songs, chants, and reforming rhythms for performance.
My influences are some of the oldest and most exciting rhythms in the world: which come from the regions of Mycrassia, (Asia Minor) now Turkey. and North Africa.
MY BACKGROUND
My father's name was Platon Hadzi Antoniou, and my mother, Thorothea Haritos. Thorothea and Platon met and married in Australia in the late 1940's. I was their second child and was christened 'Chrisoula'.
I am known as Chrisse Mam'Afrika Feros (I was given this title by my band members further to the performance of the song "MamAfrika" on my debut album, entitled No More Justifying).
The families of my parents were born and had lived in the beautiful Greek Provinces and cities of Mycrassia, (Asia Minor), and Smyrna - in now what is known as Turkey.
Of Greek Nationality - their homeland no longer exists. The refugees from Mycrassia had to make new homes for themselves. My people resettled on the islands of Lesvos, and Kastellorizo, in Piraeus, and in Australia. We are known as "Mycrassia'tes"
They brought with them, their belongings, and their memories, their priceless treasure of Greek culture, music and song, including traditional rhythms of Greece, such as the Re'Betico, Tsifteteli, Sousta, Sirto, and the Kalamatiano.
I was raised and educated in the Northern Territory and spent my senior schooling years at Ipswich Girls Grammar School in Queensland. I studied music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Upon graduating, I furthered my own research of 'roots music', world music rhythms, lyric and voice. As well as this, I was composing and producing albums for a variety of artists. |
